The world walks against hunger

Accra, June 14, GNA – The World Food Programme in conjunction with the United Nations and TNT Post Group would be organising a sponsored walk dubbed, “Walk the World – Fight Hunger” on Sunday, June 20, 2004 to solicit funds to help combat hunger.

The five-kilometre walk, the first to be held in Ghana, would begin at Golden Tulip, through the Sankara Interchange, Ring Road East and would end at the United Nations Development Project (UNDP).

According to an official statement issued in Accra and signed by Mavis A. Ewa, Event Co-ordinator, the aim of the annual event was to revive the concept of School Farming Projects (Operation Feed Yourself) and to create the awareness among the youth on the importance of being self-sufficient where agricultural produce was concerned.

The walk was part of TNT Post Group’s social responsibility to feed the hungry all over the world and would be held simultaneously in 64 countries.

Beneficiaries for the sponsorship would include schools in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti and Upper West regions. The statement said Chief Executives and Heads of Departments were to nominate a minimum of five employees to participate in the event and each participant would be sponsored for a minimum rate of 20,000 cedis per kilometre.
