The police should take the high moral road

Koforidua, May 20, GNA-Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea- Kubi, Eastern Regional Minister, on Friday advised the police to guard against all tendencies likely to cast a slur on the reputation of the Service He noted that the police were doing well by living up to expectation of the populace by combating crime such as armed robbery, child trafficking, drug peddling and other criminal activities in the region in spite of numerous logistical constraints.
Dr Appea-Kubi said in spite of those achievements and successes chalked by the police, activities of some personnel left much to be desired. The regional minister therefore appealed to the police not to shield their colleagues whose activities went contrarily to the rules and regulations of the service, but fish them out to face the necessary disciplinary action to save the service from public ridicule. Dr Appea- Kubi, who is also the former deputy Minister of Interior, made the call when he addressed officers and men of the service of the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua as part of his tour of the New Juaben Municipality.
The regional minister pledged his total support to the police to ensure that crime prevention becomes easier for them through the provision of logistics. The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwabena Gyamera, briefing the regional minister said the command consisted of six divisions aside the regional police headquarters with 22 districts with 74 stations. He said during the first quarter of this year, his outfit recorded 5,588 cases as against 5,769 recorded the same period last year thus a reduction of 181 cases with motor traffic offences of 184 in the fist quarter of the year as against 297 recorded last year which saw a reduction of 113. ACP Gyamera attributed the significant reduction in crime generally and motor traffic offences to the intensification of patrols and police visibility on the roads. He assured that they would do all they could to ensure that crime cases continued to reduce in the region so that people could go about their normal business without fear.
