The people of Ayawaso cries for electricity

Accra, Aug 15, GNA – The Chief and people of Ayawaso, have appealed to the Ga West District Assembly (GWDA) for assistance to get the town connected to the national electricity grid.

Nii Kojo Tettey II, Ayawaso Mantse, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that several attempts over the last four years to the Assembly for help them get electricity power had fallen on deaf hears.

He was speaking after activities marking this year’s Homowo festival of the Gas at Ayawaso at the weekend.

“We have erected poles through communal labour, secured a transformer and made several contacts with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) but they keep on promising us and never turn up,” Nii Tettey said.

“The District Assembly as matter of urgency should liase with ECG to bring power to the town within the shortest possible time to enhance development,” he added.

Nii Tettey noted that the absence of electricity in the area had affected education and made a negative impact on development since the town had been cut from other parts District and Accra.

The Ayawaso Manste stated that the town, one of the earliest Ga settlements could not boast of pipe-borne water while the only borehole was not functioning forcing the people to depend on a stream.

This does not speak well of a town within the environs of the nation’s capital city, he said, adding that, the water situation exposed the inhabitants to health hazards and urged the authorities to “act now”.

Nii Tettey noted that the only school in the community was up to Primary six and said the pupil had to walk a long distance to attend Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) at Pokuase or Ofanko.

He called for government support to establish JSS in the town to reduce the stress on pupils and to enhance education.

Nii Tettey sprinkled kpokpoi, the festival meal to symbolise the end of hunger, crave providence for a good harvest and to ask for the protection of the ancestors from their enemies. He called for unity among Gas and Ghanaians, peace and stability needed for accelerated development. 15 Aug 06
