LEGON, July 8, GNA – The members of the Legon local branches of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) have vehemently rejected the 22 per cent salary increase proposed by the Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VCG) at the negotiating table in Legon, on Wednesday.
The Chairman of the TEWU local branch, Mr Peter Lumor, was addressing a meeting of the two unions at the Jones Quartey Building Complex in Legon. Mr Lumor also told the gathering that the VCG had refused to implement the University of Ghana’s salary relativity ratio, which he believed when implemented will go a long way to boost the salaries of TEWU and FUSSAG.
The TEWU Chairman added that the TEWU and FUSSAG members from all the six universities in Ghana have given the VCG up to the July 18, 2005 to reconvene at the negotiation table and revisit the issue for an upward adjustment.
Mr Lumor reiterated that, since the University of Ghana would be reopening during the first week of August 2005, he prayed that an agreeable solution should be met to avoid any eminent industrial action on campus, which could draw back reopening arrangements.
Meanwhile, two-thirds of the University of Ghana’s conditions of service have been revised by the VCG, while the remaining part would be considered at a later date.
