The Voice reports that the NPP parliamentary Minority Group has reminded the Rawlings regime that Members of Parliament, as one of the three arms of government, are entitled to be accommodated by the state as it is being done in the case of the executive and the judiciary. The Voice says the NPP Minority Group has therefore declared that it will not be a party to a clandestine move to divert a percentage of the district assemblies’ common fund to buy 200 SSNIT flats for its members. The Voice says according to reliable parliamentary sources, the Committee of the Whole House, met behind closed doors last week during which the Majority leadership tried to sell its “attractive and innocently sounding” package to the MPs. According to the paper, the minority Group, sensing the explosive nature of the ploy, spurned the offer, saying that it will amount to diversion which they will find it difficult not only to justify but to explain to the satisfaction of the rural communities since the common fund is earmarked strictly for rural development.
