The Future Is Bright — Black Queens Coach After 2026 WAFCON Qualification

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says Ghana’s women’s national team is only getting stronger after sealing qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Swede was full of praise for his players after a dominant 7-0 aggregate victory over Egypt in the final round of qualifiers, a result that secured Ghana back-to-back appearances at the continental showpiece.

With 22 players from the 2024 WAFCON squad still part of the current setup, Björkegren believes the team’s consistency and depth are beginning to show.

“We can be better in all different ways; we are not finished yet, we will keep building,” he said.
“We know that some young girls are pushing from the Princesses team and from the Women’s Premier] League, they have potential that can help us. But this group deserves respect for what they’ve done.”

The Black Queens, who claimed bronze at the last WAFCON after a dramatic penalty shootout win over South Africa, have shown steady improvement under Björkegren’s guidance.

As they prepare to return to Morocco next year, the coach says the focus is on growth and long-term success with hopes of going one step further and qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

“We are getting better and better,” Björkegren added. “You saw it at the WAFCON, and you’ve seen it again against Egypt. The future is bright for this team.”
