Nana Akomea, former Managing Director of the State Transport Company, has expressed concerns that the NPP’s post-election “Thank You Tour” was turning into a popularity contest rather than a unity-building exercise.
He noted that some party members used the tour to showcase their loyalty to specific flagbearer hopefuls, creating tension within the party.
The tour was marred by controversies, including an incident at KNUST where a student was stabbed, prompting Kennedy Agyapong to pull out. Akomea lamented the chaos and misunderstandings that characterized the tour, citing an incident involving the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako.
Akomea attributed the party’s divisions to loyalty to flagbearer hopefuls, ethnicity, and religion. He stated that the National Council decided to schedule the flagbearer election for January 2026 to address the growing disunity.
The NPP has officially announced that its presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026, following a meeting by the party’s National Executive Committee.
