Textbooks for Private Schools

The Deputy Education Minister, Alhaji Rashid Bawa says the Ghana Education Service (GES) will ensure that private schools get their share of textbooks supplied to educational institutions.

He said this at the second Graduation Ceremony of the Lord is My Shepherd Educational Centre at Nyanyano Kakraba in the Gomoa East District in the Central Region.

He said to strengthen private sector participation in the educational sector, the Ministry of Education in consultation with the GES Council has appointed a Director of Education to head the Private School Unit. “This will pave way for a more effective communication and collaboration between the Ministry and the National Association of Private Schools.”

He acknowledged the contribution of Mr. David Mustill, a British Airways Aircraft Dispatcher, who is the founder of the school and his colleagues for making the school what it is.

The Headmaster, Mr. S.K. Zonyira said the Educational Centre was established through the initiative of Mr. Mustill after he saw the deplorable state of schools on his visit to the area.

The Centre, which was opened in 1996 with seven children, now has 541 pupils with 273 boys and 268 girls and 35 staff members. This year, 34 candidates took the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Minister commissioned a computer laboratory with fifteen computers at the school.
