TEWU to review strike immediately, if …

Accra, June 11, GNA – The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress on Saturday said it would review its industrial action immediately the Ghana Education Service management obtained the mandate and resumes negotiations with the union.

This was contained in a letter to the National Labour Commission in which it stated that the management committee of TEWU met and noted with grave concern the dilly-dallying of the GES management and its disregard for NLC’s January 2006 and June 2006 directives issued to the GES management and copied to TEWU.

This followed a meeting attended by TEWU on the instruction of NLC on June 8, 2006 for the two parties to meet and discuss the four issues that led to the strike action with a view to taking a lasting decision. The issues include, Risk allowance, Responsibility allowance, Salary review, and End of service benefit.

The letter copied to the Chief of Staff, Ministers of Manpower, Finance and Economic Planning, GES council, Secretary General TUC, and Director General of the GES and the media stated that however, management for the third time between September, 2005 and June 2006 attended the meeting without government mandate to resume negotiations with the union.
