TEWU members give ultimatum to GES

Takoradi, Oct. 20, GNA – The Sekondi-Takoradi and the Ahanta West District branches of Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) say they would advise themselves if the authorities of the Ghana Education Service (GES) fail to act positively on their grievances by November 15, this year.

This was contained in a resolution adopted at an emergency joint meeting of the union at Takoradi on Wednesday.

The Union members claimed that, their grievances including salary levels, salary discrepancies, salary arrears from 2001 and other issues have been pending before the authorities as far back as 1999, but nothing positive had been done about these issues “The adamant attitude of the GES authorities has led us into temptation to advise ourselves”, they added.

Mr Owusu Hammond, Regional Chairman of TEWU, Mr Dan Dasah, Sekondi-Takoradi District chairman, Mr Maxwell Oduro, Principal Industrial Relations Officer (PIRO) of the union, signed the resolution on behalf of the members.

Addressing the members earlier, Mr Dan Ayim Antwi, General Secretary of TEWU asked them not to allow their political affiliations to divide the united front of the union.

He expressed regret that some members refused to participate in actions collectively agreed upon by the entire union members as a result of their political leanings.

Mr Antwi pointed out that, he personally cannot “fight for the achievement of your needs without your active involvement”.
