TEWU calls off strike

Accra, June 16, GNA – The Management Committee of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Friday directed all members of the union currently on strike to resume work with immediate effect.

A press release from TEWU, signed by Mr Dan Ayim Antwi and Alhaji H.I. Kambasi, General Secretary and National Chairman of the Union, respectively, said that the Ghana Education Service (GES) had received the needed mandate to proceed on with negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

It said the information was contained in a letter from the Director-General of the GES to the Union.

Accordingly, the union has therefore been invited to a meeting on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 to resume negotiation on the deferred proposals for the review of the Collective Agreement”, the release said. The delay of the mandate led to the industrial action by the unionists.

The release said any further developments would be brought to the notice of the rank and file through the union channels.

“We thank our rank and file for the maturity and solidarity displayed during the industrial action”, the statement added.
