TEWU appeals to GES for better conditions of service

Agona Swedru(C/R), March 21, GNA – The members of the Teachers and Education Workers Union of the Ghana Education Service in Agona West have appealed to the government to include them in the negotiations of the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure.

According to them, their conditions of service had expired since 2008 and this has made it difficult for them to go into negotiations with the government. Mr Francis Odoom, Chairman of the Union who made this known at the press briefing at Agona Swedru on Friday, said the GES was discriminating against the non-teaching staff as afar as allowances are concerned.

He said though last year the government provided professional allowance to the teachers, the members of TEWU were left out completely.

Mr Odoom, who is also the Chairman of the Agona West Municipal of Council of Labour, expressed regret that TEWU members would not have the 15 percent retention premium allowance granted to the teachers by the government. He said a letter had been received from the GES headquarters in Accra, demanding the list of teachers for the payment of responsibilities allowance and this did not include the non-teaching staff.

Mr Odoom said the auditor, accountant, administrator and other professionals employed by the GES should also enjoy such allowance as provided by the government. The Chairman said without these professionals, it would be difficult for teachers to work satisfactorily. 21 March 11
