TESCOM appeals to NPP hierarchy on policies

Sunyani (B/A) July 22, GNA – The Sunyani Polytechnic branch of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party on Thursday appealed to the party hierarchy to motivate the body to explain government policies to the people.

The Confederacy made the appeal at the handing over ceremony of its old executives to the incoming executives in Sunyani.

Mr. Amoako Asiedu Atta-Kakra, President, stressed the need to equip the students with the necessary logistics and facilities to undertake outreach programmes, particularly in deprived communities. He explained that people in these areas do not understand government policies and are easily bombarded with outright lies and unfounded allegations by some politicians against the NPP. “TESCON played a major role in the 2004 elections in which NPP chalked success and it is imperative that greater efforts are made to retain power in 2008 to enable the government to complete more development projects”, the student leader said.

On the ongoing debate about the People’s Representation Bill, Mr. Atta-Kakra appealed to both the majority and minority in Parliament to agree to amend PNDC Law 284, “which does not allow our brothers and sisters living outside the country to register and vote in public elections.

“The remittances they send to their families and relatives in the country help to boost the economy of the country”, he added. Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, indicated that it was the responsibility of Municipal and District Chief Executives to fund the activities of TESCON. He promised to meet all Assemblies in the region to find means of financing TESCON programmes.

Mr. Awuah advised the students to check the activities of their Municipal and District Executives against fraudulent behaviours. July 22 05
