Tenure of MMDA’s ends today

Regional Ministers have been requested to remind all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and all Unit Committees in their regions that their tenure ends today March 14, 2015.

In the meantime, MMDCEs have been directed not to take any decision that required the approval of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDAs) or their respective Executive Committees.

An official statement from the Ministry of Communications on Friday, said the notice was signed by Mr Edwin Nii Vandepuye, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to all Regional Ministers.

The statement said this was in pursuant to Article 246 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, upon which the MMDAs were inaugurated into office on March 15, 2011, and therefore they should be dissolved by the close of March 14, 2015 by which time their tenure of office ends.

The Deputy Minister’s notice also emphasised that “pending the conduct of District Level Elections this year, to enable the successor Assemblies to be constituted, MMDCEs were to be responsible for the day-to-day performance of the executive and administrative functions of their Assemblies, as pertains in Article 243 (2) (b) and (c) of the Constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) (c) and (d) of the Local Government Act of 1993 (Act 462).
