Tension at Ghana Mission in London

Reports reaching Daily Guide indicate that tension is brewing at the Ghana High Commission in London following the decision to elevate Zuwaira Ibrahima as Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom ahead of her seniors.

Ms. Ibrahima, currently the Information Officer, has several superior officers apart from the High Commissioner, Victor Emmanuel Smith.

According to sources, the decision to elevate her above her superiors such as George Blankson, Minister Counsellor for Welfare, is causing disaffection in the High Commission and it may likely undermine the esprit de corps among the staff.

Attempts to speak to the newly appointed High Commissioner – Mr. Smith – failed as a call to his North West London official residence Saturday morning elicited a response that he was having a shower and that he would be informed to return the call, which never came. Several other calls made to his mobile line were unanswered.

Daily Guide learnt that Ms. Zuwaira, who is alleged to be connected to the ‘corridors of power’ in Accra, might be named this week as the Deputy Head of Mission to Mr. Smith.

Both positions are political appointments, but aggrieved staff are of the opinion that if the Information Officer was to be elevated, she should have been sent to another mission where she would be acting in a new capacity but not in London where she has been taking orders from her current superiors. They claimed that such a role reversal would not be good enough for the mission.
