Agona Swedru, Sept 23, GNA – No candidate of 10 Junior High Schools (JHS) in the Agona West Municipality and the Agona East District in the Central Region qualified at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to gain admission to senior high school. This means that none of these candidates scored between aggregate six in the exams, Mr Jacob Felix Obeng-Forson, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) told reporters during a tour of some basic schools in line with the “My First Day at School” Programme on Wednesday. The schools are: Agona Duotu District Assembly JHS, Mankrong District Assembly JHS, Akokuasa District Assembly JSS, Keyanko District Assembly JHS, Amanful Salvation Army District Assembly JHS and Fante Bawjiase District Assembly from Agona East The rest are, Agona Nyakrom Anglican, District Assembly JHS, Nyakrom SDA JHS, Swedru Wawaase District Assembly, Otsenkorang District Assembly JHS. The MCE expressed regret about the poor performance of candidates and charged the Agona West Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to explore avenues to reverse the situation. Mr Obeng-Forson assured the GES that the assembly would put in strategies that would assist the directorate to monitor the affected schools and offer help where necessary. The MCE exhorted teachers in the Municipality to adopt positive attitudinal changes in their profession, adding that, teachers must show commitment, love and passion to enable them to serve as role models to the children. Mrs Ernestina Nkansah, Deputy Director of Education in Charge of Agona West Municipal, said the 2010 BECE results was a big disgrace to the two districts. She said the directors of the districts would quickly move to the affected schools and also meet their PTAs on how best the result could be improved in the next examination. Mrs Nkansah attributed the poor results of some schools to lack of supervision and cautioned absentee teachers to change their minds for the better otherwise they would be severely punished. Mr Obeng-Forson and Mrs Nkansah visited the Upper Bobikuma AME Zion Primary/JHS, Abodom Presbyterian Primary School and Lower Bobikuma Seventh Day Adventist schools as part of my the programme to welcome 56 new children to the three schools. Fruit drinks, biscuits and plastic drinking cups were distributed to the children.
