Ten people perished in Volta Lake boat disaster

Accra, April 18, GNA – It is now established that 10 people died in the boat disaster on the Volta Lake on Saturday April 8 2006.

The Minister of Harbours and Railways, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi had given the official figure when he addressed a press conference on the disaster on Wednesday April 12 2006 in Accra.

When GNA followed up to Tepa-Abotoase on Sunday April 16 2006, the Secretary to the Boat Owners Association, Mr Yaw Kaizaro Awoye confirmed that only the following died in the disaster: Yayra Tobo aged one year eight months; Kweku Ahiagba, three years; Bright Marcharty, one year seven months; Doe Tabo, eight years; Fati Hassan, seven years; Lydia Ahiagba, five years; Lamin Siedu, 16 years; Mami Labila, 40 year-old pregnant woman; Ama Bedra, 46 years and Gado Zamanama, 70 years.
