Ten KNUST students benefit from Nankani and Hagan scholarship scheme

Kumasi, April 30, GNA – Ten second year brilliant but needy science students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi benefited from the S.T. Nankani and Hagan scholarship scheme this year.

Nine of them received GH¢2,500 each while a medical science student had GH¢3,000.

They were Ulzen Jacob, Aning Joseph, Danso Antoinette Simpaah and Agbesi Peter all of Agricultural Science Department, Nkrumah Philip Nti and Mintah De-Graft Samuel both of Department of Agricultural Engineering.

The rest were Philemon Gyasi-Antwi of Theoretical and Applied Biology Department, Opoku Clement, Pharmacy Department, Addai Boamah Kwadwo, Biochemistry Department and Agyeman Seth of Human Biology Department.

Dr Essel Benjamin Hagan, Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the Scheme, making the presentation said it was instituted about five years ago in honour of the Former Managing Director of S.T. Nankani and Hagan Limited.

He said 36 applications were received of which 15 were interviewed and 10 of them selected.

Dr Hagan pledged commitment of the Trustees to sustain the scheme, improve upon it and make periodic review of beneficiaries performance. Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice Chancellor of KNUST, expressed appreciation to the Trustees of the scheme for their support to the students.

He called on other institutions, NGOs and philanthropists to emulate their example.

Professor Adarkwa said the university had 24,000 students and most of them needed assistance to continue their education. He said plans were far advanced for other faculties in the university to initiate schemes to assist students.

Mr Philemon Gyasi-Antwi on behalf of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Trustees and university authorities for their initiative and pledged to work hard to reciprocate the gesture.
