Ten die of typhoid fever in Ejura

Ten people mostly children died of typhoid fever at Amenamu, a farming community in the Ejura-Sekyedumase District, between May and June.

The death is expected to go up as about 80 more people are receiving treatment at either Ejura or Asante-Mampong Government Hospital.

Miss Mercy Acheampong, the Ejura-Sekyedumase District Environmental Health Officer, said this at a forum on: “Authorised and Unauthorised Development” at Ejura last Tuesday.

The forum, organised by the German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), the District Assembly and the Traditional Council, took the form of picture exhibition on authorised and unauthorised developments at Ejura.

She blamed the people of Amenamu for their predicament saying they had continuously drank water from a polluted stream against medical advice.

Nana Boakye Yiadom, the District Planning Officer, said typhoid cases could be higher in Ejura than that recorded in Amenamu.

He said this against the background that the people of Ejura especially those staying in the Zongo communities stayed in unhygienic conditions.

Mr John Duti, GTZ National Development Planner, said he was happy that the people had recognised the impact of their actions and had pledged to co-operate with the Town Planning Department in its efforts to make Ejura a convenient area to befit its urban council status.
