Tema, July 07, GNA — The Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) has given the government a two-week ultimatum to meet the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to discuss and review the current “economic hardship” in the country.
The Council threatened to demonstrate against the harsh economic stance of the government if it fails to meet the leaders to address their concerns.
Members of the TDCL comprising the entire workers gave the ultimatum at a general meeting of the Council at Tema.
They deliberated at length on the economic hardship of workers, review of income tax threshold, taxation on overtime, policy on imported garments, utility tariffs and the minimum wage. The workers complained that the harsh economic policies of the government coupled with the meagre salaries of workers has worsened their plight and called on the government to be sensitive enough and address their concerns.
They said any attempt to increase utility tariffs would be met with stiff resistance.
Mr Wilson Agana, chairman of the TDCL said the council petitioned the government on the issues but failed to meet with the TUC leadership until the media exposed the issue and promised to meet them again to discuss it finally but has failed to honour its promise.
