Tema West NPP in turmoil

Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West constituency have been assaulted by some ‘macho’ (stoutly-built) men believed to have been sent by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Irene Naa Torshie Addo.

The incident, which occurred at Kanewu, near Adjei-Kojo at the Great Counselor International School last Saturday, led to the destruction of some properties.

Some supporters who participated in a get-together, health walk and screening exercise believed to have been organized by Carlos Ahinkra, a freight forwarder who had declared his intention to contest the MP in the next NPP parliamentary primary when nominations open, received their share of the beatings.

According to information gathered, the health walk and the screening were an initiative of Mr. Ahinkra to encourage more eligible NPP delegates to vote for him when the parliamentary primary was due.

In the course of the exercise the unknown ‘macho’ men attacked the party supporters with clubs and injured a private Disk Jockey (DJ) hired to provide music at the early morning programme.

Kwesi Poku, former youth organizer for Tema West NPP and Assembly Member for Community 2 who was also allegedly attacked, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, indicating that the attack was unprovoked and suspected that the attackers were hired by the MP to intimidate them.

According to him, the incident had been reported at the Ashaiman Divisional Police Command which has commenced investigation into the matter.

When contacted, Madam Torshie denied hiring thugs to destruct the programme, but said she heard of the incident.

She was surprised that such an event had been organized in her constituency without her knowledge, only to be informed via telephone about the incident.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the scene a few minutes after the occurrence, plastic chairs, electrical appliances belonging to the DJ, food, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration machine – which was registering some party faithful and residents – had been destroyed.
