THE TEMA TRADITIONAL Council has instituted a ?2 billion Educational Endowment Fund to assist the youth in the area to broaden their horizon in education.
The main areas the fund will be used include supporting deserving applicants to Second Cycle and Tertiary institutions, encourage pupils in basic schools to higher levels of education, and to encourage parents to send their wards to schools, and assist in the funding of educational programmes and projects.
The Minister of Education, Prof. C. Ameyaw-Akumfi, who launched the fund at an impressive ceremony at the Tema Manhem palace last Friday, lauded the efforts of the traditional authorities for their encouraging involvement in the promotion of education.
He stressed that the establishment of the endowment fund by the traditional council will help to expand access and widen opportunities for many more youth to go to school and to participate actively in future to the development and prosperity of the nation.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi stated that in deciding on how to manage the fund successfully, urged the council to appoint people with proven integrity, honesty and dedication to work tirelessly and ensure resounding success of the fund.
He intimated that education funding is very central to NPP government’s objective of improving educational standards and expanding access to education at all levels.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), S. E. A. Narh, said in spite of the fact that some progress has been made the provision of schools, water, and electricity, among others, in the rural communities, there is much room for improvement.
In this connection TMA will task itself to formulate policy to address the inadequacies in terms of provision of basic infrastructure in the rural communities.
