Tema Teacher suggests separate Ministry for Water and Fisheries

Tema, Dec 19, GNA — Mr Ebenezer T. Otoo, a teacher at Tema, has suggested a separate Ministry for Water Management and Fisheries to ensure rapid growth of the economy.

In a letter addressed to President John Agyekum Kufuor and copied to the Ghana News Agency, he said such a ministry should be given special attention under the President’s Special Initiative “since all projects under the PSI are doing well”.

He said placing Water Management under the Ministry of Works and Housing was not feasible and stressed the need to separate it as well as Fisheries detached from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Asked why Water Management and Fisheries should fall under one Ministry, Mr Otoo said much water is needed in fishing and expressed the hope that much care and attention would be given to water bodies in order to get abundant fish to feed the nation and some for export”. He said most water bodies have dried up because of long neglect by the appropriate ministry while man’s activities have also compounded the problems, thus rendering the Fisheries Department and fishermen inoperative.
