Tema Rotary Club to embark on reading competition

Tema, July 20, GNA — The Rotary Club of Tema is to start a reading competition among students of Senior Secondary Schools in Tema to promote good reading.

Launching the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Club in Tema, Mr Alex Fiagome, President of the Club noted that English speaking among the youth these days needs to be taken seriously and that the move of the Club is aimed at enhancing quality education.

He said Rotarians would be assigned to the schools to take up the reading exercise every Thursday and hoped to achieve good results.

According to him since its formation in 1964 with seven founding members and now increased to 27, the club, in line with it motto, “”Service above self” has undertaken social responsibilities to help improve the lot of the community, especially the underprivileged.

He mentioned some as the construction of a clinic for the Kpone community, a centre to train the physically challenged, blood donation of various items to hospitals, and orphanages, presentation of assorted books to educational institutions and currently construction of a wall around the Tema Community one Padmore Primary School whose premises is serving as dwelling place for the neighbouring community.

Mr Fiagome said a fund raising dance is expected to be held soon to raise funds in aid of the 600-meterlong sandcrete wall.
