Tema, Dec. 20, GNA – Residents of Tema Communities Four and Seven have protested against the location of a gas filling station within the community and said it would pose threat to life and property. The residents said the location of the station, a few meters away from a petrol filling station, was dangerous.
A petition signed by Nana Yaw Owusu on behalf of the residents called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Disaster Management Organisation to inspect the location and offer expert advice to both the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) and Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) who sanctioned the construction of the gas filling station.
It expressed surprise that that portion of land between communities Four and Seven was sold by the TDC and TMA to a private developer, “JAKMABLE ENTERPRISE” for commercial purpose without taking the lives of residents into consideration.
The residents said the open space was the only one left for recreational grounds.
The Member of Parliament for Tema East, Mr Ishmael Ashiety, has cited a business centre there to train the youth in various vocations. The petition said following their protest work on the project was stopped in 2005 but to their dismay work re-started in October 2006. It appealed to TDC and the TMA to halt the project “to enable us live in peace.”
