The Tema Regional Police Command in 2012 recorded a total of 13,017 criminal reported cases over the 16,662 received in 2011.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, who made this known during the command’s 2013 West Africa Security Services Association, said the figure showed a decrease of 3,645 cases.
DCOP Atingane said the decrease was achieved through the alertness and hard work of personnel of the security agencies in the region as well as the cooperation of the public.
He said the command has resolved to reduce the figure to the barest minimum through hard work.
“I can confidently assure you that the year 2013 will certainly see a step up in Police/Military operations to drastically reduce crime and make Tema and its environs a safe haven,” he noted.
He said due to the emerging of large communities, there was the need for the construction of more police stations in the region to bring policing to the doorsteps of the people.
Nii Adjei Kraku II, Tema Manste who chaired the programme congratulated the police for effectively policing the region during, before and after the December 2012 general election.
He said the vigilance and professionalism of the security agencies helped to minimise violence and criminal activities during the electioneering.
He appealed to the police to provide adequate protection for informants rather than exposing them to the criminals in order to get cordial relationship with civilians.
Mr Daniel Titus Glover, Member of Parliament for Tema East also congratulated the police for their unbiased stand during Election 2012.
He gave the assurance that he would champion the need for State to provide insurance cover for the security agencies to motivate them to give off their best.
Fifteen hardworking personnel were awarded for their commitment to the command.
Lance Corporal Betty Bonsu of the Buffalo Unit of the command was presented with a double door fridge for being the overall best personnel for 2012.
