Tema, Jan. 21, GNA — The Tema Police Regional Command recorded 32 armed robbery cases in 2006 out of the 30 cases recorded in 2005 with residential robbery topping with 23 cases in 2006 as against 20 in 2005. Rape and defilement cases also recorded 120 cases in 2006 as against 109 cases recorded in 2005.
The above depicts a 6 percent and 11 percent increase in armed robbery and rape cases respectively in the year 2006. These were disclosed by the Regional Commander Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Jonathan Yakubu on Friday during their 2007 WASSA celebration in Tema.
He noted that even though the year 2006 saw a steady rise in both armed robbery and sexual offences it reduced during the latter parts of the year as a result of proactive measures put in place by personnel of his command.
His administration, he announced has declared total war on robberies and other serious crimes this year and appealed to the members of the public to also support by providing vital information on criminal activities and other logistics like vehicles to enhance its night patrols.
In addition, the Police would also intensify its educational campaigns at schools, churches as well as market places, he added. The commander said in spite of the logistical constraints personnel of the service worked creditably during the past year and reminded that the Police administration is determined to reward hard working personnel and to punish the deviant ones.
He advised the personnel on the need to be discipline loyal to the state in this jubilee year to ensure that the Golden Jubilee celebrations as well as the African Cup of Nations in 2008 are incident free.
To criminals the Regional Commander cautioned them against their activities and find a better livelihood since his administration ‘shall run after them this year and the years after until they are uprooted from the midst of decent and law abiding people of this country’. The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. David Quaye Annang reminded the officers that the service calls for total commitment to duty and cautioned them against putting personal gains before their duty. He commended the award winners for their hard work and dedication to work throughout the year and advised them against conniving and condoning with law breakers which he said goes against the principles of the service.
In all 20 personnel were awarded with the IGP award being won by Inspector Thomas Yevugah with a double door refrigerator, a citation and a certificate of honour.
