Tema needs well equipped Regional Hospital – Dr Opoku-Adusei

Dr Kwabena Opoku-Adusei, Medical Director, Tema General Hospital, has called for the upgrading and expansion of the facility into a Regional Hospiital to serve the health needs of residents in and around Tema.
He said the facility was under seroius strain, coping with the heavy out patient attendance and emergencies with limited facilities.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he said more than 900,000 people depend on the facility as a first point of call as well as the last referral post.

“There has been a huge population shift to Tena and its environs. The place is still attractive to estate developers and home buyers so naturally we should expect huge number of people in need of medical care which we will struggle to give.”

According to him, a maternity block and Theatre projects have been abandoned resulting in congestion at the small maternity ward where most women in labour cannot even get a bed to rest on.

He said emergencies are bound to rise due to the industrial and commercial importance of Tema.

According to him, the Hospital was strategically located with enough land for any expansion and upgrading.

“Tema deserves better.I hope a proper Hospital will built in our life time. A proper hospital was never built in Tema. This facility is a sprawling makeshift thing,” he said.
