Tema, Oct 28, GNA – Mr Abraham Reynolds, the Tema Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has called on traditional rulers to collaborate with the municipal/district assemblies before allocating lands to developers in order to avert disaster. He said disregard of technical directions from the Engineers Department of the assemblies normally plunge people into disasters as a result of flood.
Mr Reynolds said this when he led newsmen to inspect flood prone areas at Zenu and Ashaiman where people have built on waterways and warned of possible danger in the next two years. He said in the near future houses in those areas could be flooded and urged them to relocate in their own interest. The inspection revealed that about 16 new structures had been sited on watercourses or close to them. Farmlands in the area have also been developed into residential areas with most of them sitting on watercourses.
Mr Reynolds said NADMO would not apply force on the residents to relocate and is holding meetings to stress on the need for them to move but this has fallen on deaf ears.
