Tema court fines taxi driver three million for traffic offences

Tema, July 8, GNA – A Circuit Court ‘A’ in Tema has imposed a fine of three million cedis on a taxi driver, for carrying excess passengers and possessing invalid driving documents.

Emmanuel Tetteh, who pleaded guilty to charges of carrying excess passengers; ignoring Police warning to stop, driving without documents on insurance policy and possessing expired road worthy certificate, would go to jail for two years in default.

The Court, presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu, ordered the Police to impound the taxi- cab until the accused produced his driving licence. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Adolphus Otchere, said at about 0800 hours on June 17,2004, police personnel on duty on the Prampram- Dawhenya road signalled Emmanuel to stop, but he ignored the warning and sped off.

He said the Police chased the accused and overtook his taxicab, thus compelling him to stop.

Inspector Asiedu said when the car was inspected, the Police discovered that he was carrying six passengers instead of five. The accused could not also produce a valid road worthy certificate and a driving licence.
