Tema, Feb. 7, GNA – The Tema Office of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), received 77 complaints in 2005 with labour related complaints topping with 38 cases. There were 24 Human Rights Complaints and eight others, according to a report by the Commission, signed by its Acting Sub-Regional Director, Ms Mercy Mensah-Addo.

The report indicated that complaints were also lodged with the Commission for which guidance, counselling and advice were provided to complainants.

According to the report, 24 of the 2005 complaints were closed this year while 66 complaints pending from previous years were also closed. It said the commission embarked on public education programmes in schools, Churches and with various association groups in the Municipality on fundamental human rights and freedoms, duties of a citizen, sexual offences under the law and the Intestate Succession Law. The aim of the programmes was to reach out to more people especially the youth in the municipality to make them aware of the existence of CHRAJ so they could petition it when their human rights are violated. In all, some 2,150 people were covered.

The commission also collaborated with the Tema Domestic and Victim Support Unit of the Police Service, the Media and Abibiman Foundation, an NGO for effective work, the report said and called for sponsorship from others for its public education.
