Tema CHRAJ has handled 1,049 complaints since 1994

Tema, March 17, GNA – A CHRAJ official on Thursday appealed to employers to be conversant with the New Labour Law to forestall the rampant violation of their rights and that of employees. Mrs Joyce Boahen, Acting Tema Sub-Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), said ignorance of the law, Act 651 of 2003, has resulted in rampant complaints.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Tema, she said labour related issues topped the 1,049 complaints received by her outfit since its inception in 1994.

In 2004, she said, the Commission received 92 complaints with half bordering on dismissals, termination of appointment, salary arrears, redundancy/redeployment/end of service benefits, and the rest on tenancy, child maintenance/custody and other human rights violations. ”Employers must therefore avail themselves of the opportunity to study the law and act accordingly by respecting the rights of employees to ensure harmony at the workplaces.”

The Director urged management of establishments to always co-operate with the CHRAJ to settle cases amicably rather than to drag their feet to prolong the cases.

Mrs Boahen asked the public to patronise the public educational programmes of CHARJ to promote greater awareness of their rights. She said they must always muster the courage to report cases since the Commission exist to promote, protect and enforce their fundamental human rights irrespective of their status.
