Telecom University matriculates students

Mr. Kobby Okyere-Darko, the Member of Parliament for the Takoradi, has called on the government to award charters to private universities to advance quality education.

He said with the exception of Valley View University, all the universities operating in the country were being supervised by the traditional universities and called for immediate autonomy to such institutions to enable them to develop their curricula in line with modern trends of education for the benefits of industry.

Mr. Okyere-Darko said this at the third matriculation ceremony of the Ghana Telecom University College at Takoradi in the Western Region.

Dr. Robert Baffour Awuah, the Vice President of the GTUC urged matriculates to have vision and deep sense of ethical responsibility in changing the face of Ghana and Africa.

He said the present generation seemed to have failed Ghana and Africa adding, “You are the only hope of Ghana and the Continent”.

Dr. Awuah said Africa continued to be a challenged continent despite it numerous resources.

He said this was the time to create the new Africans the late President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said and added “We at GTUC will work in producing students who excel both in classroom and job and thrive in society to become the ambassadors for GTUC, the country and as global citizens.”

Mr. Alfred Ekow Gyan, the Deputy Western Regional Minister, said “the many years of grammar and general education has churned out many graduates without employable skills”.
