Teenager dies in attempted abortion

A 17-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student died in an attempt to abort a four-month-old pregnancy.

Elizabeth Marfo, who resides at Atwedie in the Asante-Akim South District, is believed to have taken a substance to get rid of the unwanted pregnancy after which she started experiencing severe abdominal pains.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Sandow Latebu, District Police Commander, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the teenage girl died a day after swallowing the substance.

She was rushed to the Juaso District Hospital when her situation worsened but could not be saved.

An autopsy showed that she died from an illegal abortion.

The deceased, who was an orphan for the past 15 years, had been living with her foster parent, Opanin Kwasi Marfo, at Atwedie.
