Technician jailed for forging voter’s identity card

Accra Oct. 22, GNA- A 22-year-old computer technician who forged a voter’s identity card to clear goods from a courier company was on Wednesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Regional Tribunal.

Stephen Kwasi Botwe pleaded guilty to impersonation and forging official document and the tribunal chaired by Mr. Justice P. K. Aggrey accordingly convicted him.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Kofi Abraham said the complainant is the managing director of Federal Express, a courier company, located at Asylum Down.

ASP Abraham said on September 25, this year, the police received a call from the complainant that the accused was carrying a voter’s identity card under the pretext of clearing his goods at the company which his brother who is living at abroad had sent to him.

Prosecution said Botwe, who was parading under the name Prince Opoku and an ID card with registration number 05244331 and polling station number CO20602 were handed over to the security personnel.

When Botwe was confronted as to how he came by the voters ID card he stated that he lost his voters ID card but managed to design one on a computer.

Prosecution said on September 25, this year, the ID card was forwarded to the Electoral Commissioner (EC) for verification but a report from the EC had no name as Botwe in their records and recommended that accused should be arrested.
