Techiman South MP calls for posthumous recruitment of El-Wak stampede victims

Former Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Development, Hon. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah who serves as the Member of Parliament for Techiman South Constituency in the Bono East Region has appealed to the government and the Military High Command to confer posthumous recruitment status on the six young women who died during the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

Speaking in an interview with the Media, Hon. Adjei-Mensah Korsah described the victims as “young ladies who perished in pursuit of a dream of service to their country,” adding that they deserved to be honoured with the very goal that led to their deaths.

“I humbly submit that if Government or Military High Command pleases, let’s confer a recruit’s status on our six young ladies who have just perished as a result of their pursuit of a dream of service to their country,” he wrote.

As our listeners may recall, six job seekers died and several others were injured during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/26 recruitment exercise at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security barriers and forced their way through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.

The tragedy has since sparked widespread calls for reforms in recruitment procedures, with many describing it as a reflection of Ghana’s worsening youth unemployment crisis.

The Techiman South MP’s statement comes in the wake of national mourning and outrage following the El-Wak tragedy.

Hon. Korsah said that although their lives were cut short, their sacrifice should not be in vain.

“They have met their untimely deaths sadly, but deserve to be conferred with their ultimate dream”.

“Wherever they are, let’s appease their souls with their heart’s desire. Let not their bloodshed on this unfinished journey of a noble cause be in vain.”
