Techiman (B/A), July 27, GNA – Mr. Alex Kyeremeh, Techiman Municipal Chief Executive, has urged adult illiterates to take advantage of the re-introduction of the functional literacy programme of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) to learn to read and write. Mr. Kyeremeh made the call when he presented items to 90 NFED facilitators who had successfully supervised adult literacy training programmes between 2004 and 2007. The incentive packages included 41 bundles of roofing sheets, nine bicycles, 17 sewing machines, and 23 ghetto blasters, estimated at about 9,000 Ghana Cedis.
Mr. Kyeremeh commended the previous government for embracing the NFED programme, and said the NDC government would strengthen the programme by encouraging women to enrol. He reminded the people that the literacy campaign was not only to teach participants how to read and write but also to let them know their civic responsibilities at both the community and the national levels. Mr. Kyeremeh gave the assurance that the assembly would support the literacy drive in the municipality.
Mr. Fosu Boamah, Municipal Director of NFED, indicated that the 90 facilitators had turned out a total of 2,669 functional literacy graduates in the municipality within 18 months, and commended them for their dedication to duty.
Mr. Boamah said the programmes were structured to ensure that majority of illiterate Ghanaians could acquire skills in reading, writing and numeracy for their own benefit.
Opanin P.K. Manu from Twimia in Nkeweaso zone was adjudged the best facilitator, and received one bundle of roofing sheets. 27 July 09
