Techiman butchers to go on strike over dilapidated abattoir

Techiman (B/A), Feb.12, GNA- Techiman Butchers Association, has threatened to go on strike and suspend the payment of revenue to the Municipal Assembly if the authorities did not renovate the local abattoir.

Mr Mahama Seidu Nsuta, Chairman of the Association told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Techiman that the roof of the slaughterhouse is leaking while there are no nets on the windows to keep the place safe for business. He said some social deviants had capitalised on the dilapidated nature of the structure to smoke marijuana, soil the premises with human excreta and engage in other anti-social activities in the night.

Mr Nsuta said the Association drew the attention of the Municipal Assembly and the Environmental Health Division four years ago about the problem. In his reaction, Mr Isaac Osei-Antwi, Municipal Chief Executive said the Assembly asked the butchers to renovate the abattoir with their own resources in other to enjoy a three- month tax holiday and asked them to abide by the terms o the agreement.
