Enchi (W/R), July 7, GNA – Hundreds of teachers from first and second cycle schools in the Aowin-Suaman district last Friday undertook a four-hour peaceful march through principals streets of Enchi to press their demand for a better pension scheme.
They carried placards, some of which read “Mr. President, act on positive change”, “Teachers are equally important”, and “SSNIT pension scheme kills more than HIV/AIDS”.
Mr. John Agyei, district chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in a resolution, called on the Government to come out with a comprehensive pension scheme for Teachers to end their suffering after active service.
Mr. Samuel Donkor, District Coordinating Director who received the resolution on behalf of the District Chief Executive advised them to exercise restraint while the Government continue to find a lasting solution to the problems confronting teachers and other workers. He told them that the Government has set up an independent committee to deal with the matter and therefore asked them to be patient and wait for the committee to submit its report.
Mr. Donkor said the Government has workers interests at heart and would not turn deaf ears to their problems. Mr. Edmund Edward Kofi Arthur, district GNAT secretary later told the promote their work.
He also called on the Ghana Education Service to send more teachers to the districts, since most classrooms are without teachers.
