Teachers given cash to hold extra classes for JHS pupils

Yeji (B/A), June 16, GNA – Forty-eight teachers have been given GHC 12,000 financial support to offer extra classes to more than 1,400 final year students of Junior High Schools (JHSs) in the Pru District of Brong-Ahafo Region.

The support, instituted by the former Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, would be an annual affair to uplift the fallen standards of education in the area.

Mr. Yaw Manu, District Director of Education, told the GNA in an interview that it was the hope that Dr. Donkor’s intervention would enable the district to perform well during examinations. Mr. Manu said the directorate would continue to cooperate with Dr. Donkor to identify some areas which needed support in the education sector and appealed to philanthropists and resident citizens and those abroad to emulate the shinning example of Dr. Donkor.

Dr. Donkor earlier urged parents to take critical look at the educational needs of their children, saying that was the best legacy they could bequeath to them.

He expressed concern about the high rate of child labour and low standard of girls’ education in the area and said it was important to eliminate those two ills. Dr. Donkor said his support would not be limited to the Pru area but would be extended to the Atebubu-Amantin District. 16 June 1
