Teachers declare nationwide strike in hours

Teachers in Ghana will declare a nationwide strike at a news conference today, Friday March 15, 2013.

A reliable source within the Teachers’ leadership told XYZ News: “We now have no choice than to support our other colleagues who have already declared a strike”.

The teachers say they have four major grievances which have still not been addressed by the government despite several overtures in that regard.

One of those major issues has to do with “delays in resolving outstanding issues concerning promotion”.

The two main teachers groups National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers suspended an earlier declaration of strike early this year after the intervention of Chief of Staff Prosper Bani.

They however say their patience has run thin and will no longer allow themselves to be taken for granted.

The joint news conference to announce the nationwide strike will be held at the GNAT headquarters here in Accra.
