Teacher strike: 51,000 teachers to be paid by October 16, says minister

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has instructed the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to create a supplementary payroll for 51,000 teachers whose records have been processed and validated.

The teachers are expected to receive their salaries by October 16, while the remaining affected staff are due to be paid by the end of October.

Mr Iddrisu announced the plan during a meeting with education stakeholders at Adukrom in the Eastern Region, as the government continues efforts to address the issues behind the ongoing teachers’ strike.

He said talks with the Controller and Accountant-General were at an advanced stage and that instructions had been issued to speed up the payment process.

“With the teachers, we are almost there. Part of the reason I sat at the back was to engage the Controller and Accountant-General and to give him firm instructions, with the support of the Minister of Finance, that on or before 16th October, you must roll out a supplementary payroll to at least provide for the new salary grade of some 51,000 teachers whose data have been validated,” he said.

The minister said the supplementary payroll would cover teachers whose information had already been verified, including those affected by the new salary grade.

The remaining teachers among the approximately 80,000 affected personnel would be added to the October payroll, he said.

“Then the rest of it, out of the 80,000, will be carried into their October salaries,” he added.

The directive is intended to allow payments to begin for the validated teachers and support wider efforts to end the industrial action.
