Teacher, nurses trainee allowances will be restored – Nana Addo

The Flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured chiefs of Adanse Fomena of his commitment to reintroduce the teacher and nurses trainee allowances should he win this year’s presidential elections.

The NPP flag bearer said this in Adanse Fomena where he paid a courtesy call on the Adansehene Nana Opekotwere Bonsera Afriyie at his palace.

Government in the year 2013 scrapped the allowances to be replaced with the Student Loan Trust Fund when it converted the certificate awarding teacher training colleges to diploma awarding Colleges of Education.

But addressing the traditional authorities and residents of Adanse Fomena as part of his ‘arise for change tour’ in the Ashanti region, Akufo -Addo stressed that government need to protect and offer support to especially nurses and teachers for the essential services they provide to the nation.

He promised, “If Ghanaians vote us back into power by the grace of God, we will restore Nursing training and teacher training allowances.”

He questioned why president John Dramani Mahama would scrap the allowances at a time government is endowed with oil revenue when the erstwhile John Kufuor administration found need to pay the allowances without the support of an added source of revenue through oil.

Nana Addo also outlined his plans to fully equip and give the Fomena Nursing Training College a facelift on a probable assumption of office as president.

Drawing inferences from the party’s implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), he beckoned the people to repose trust in him and be rest assured that he would implement every promise delivered before the chiefs.
