A taxi driver, Kwasi Gyapong, 26, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for stealing. He pleaded guilty.
He stole a generator, a wireless receiver, mega amplifier, liquid petroleum gas cylinder, a pair of canvas shoes, polo shirt and a gallon of engine oil all valued GHc1,530.
Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Albert Adiita, told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that on July 8, the convict went to Elim Evangelical Presbyterian Church premises and stole one generator, wireless receiver and a mega amplifier.
He then went to one Mr Dennis Mensah’s house and stole one LPG 14 kilogram gas cylinder, a pair of canvas shoes and polo shirt.
Gyapong put the items in a sack, dropped it in front of Mr Mensah’s fitting shop at Asankrangwa, entered the shop and stole one gallon of engine oil.
DSP Adiita said one Yaw Joe, who was returning from his village, saw the sack and opened it. Gyapong came out of the shop and told him the sack belonged to him, and Yaw Joe left.
According to the prosecutor, on July 9 the complainant went to his shop and detected the theft of the engine oil.
He informed his colleagues about the stolen items and Yaw Joe informed him that he saw Gyapong in the shop the previous night with the gallon of engine oil and the other items.
A report was made to the police and Gyapong was arrested. He admitted the offense and assisted the police to recover all the items.
