Taviefe Resident Asked To Place Interest Of School First

Taviefe-Avenya (Volta Region), 15 Oct. Captain George Nfodjo, Ho District Chief Executive, has appealed to chiefs and opinion leaders in the Taviefe traditional area to place the interest of their community secondary school above everything else so as to help it develop. Captain Nfodjo made the appeal when he and Mrs. Jane Aidam, Ho District Director of Education, visited the school yesterday to acquaint themselves with conditions there. Captain Nfodjo said the Taviefe traditional area has the resources to make the school the envy of others in the region and hoped well-meaning citizens who value education will support the school. The school has been without a board of governors since its integration into the public system seven years ago because of objections by various factions to the selection of board members. Mr. Joshua Adotey, the headmaster who briefed captain Nfodjo, said so far the parent/teacher association and the school administration have been doing their best to keep the school going. He said problems facing the school which include lack of electricity, staff and classroom accommodation and water among others, have been affecting academic work. Captain Nfodjo was particularly concerned about the deplorable conditions of the girls’ hostel where 37 girls sleep on cracking floors in groups of between eight and 17 per room. Captain Nfodjo asked the headmaster to call an emergency meeting of the PTA to consider alternative accommodation for the girls because it is risky to continue to keep them where they are now.
