Taskforce destroys ‘galamsey’ equipment in Achiase

The anti-illegal mining taskforce has seized and destroyed several mining equipment from some communities in the Ashanti region.

The taskforce set up by the Ghana Association of Small Scale Miners stormed some mining communities in Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District in the Ashanti region to clamp down on the activities of illegal miners.

Speaking to Ultimate News’ Barima Kwabena Owusu, Commander of the Taskforce, Besira Andoh, disclosed that they paid a visit to the site over the weekend and found some dredging machines which the illegal miners have used to destroy the water bodies.

According to him, their decision to destroy the equipment was to protect the image of the legal small scale miners in the country.

This comes after a national campaign by the NPP government against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey in the country.

Mr. Andoh added that the taskforce will do everything possible to clamp down on the activities of the galamseyers.

“These are the people destroying our water bodies so we want to prove to the whole world that we small scale mining association, we are not the ones destroying the water.

“We want to show that we will help the government so that we fight these people,” Mr. Andoh said.
