Task force intercepts illegal lumber in Pru District

Abease(B/A), Nov.2, GNA – A 15 member community task force formed by the Nyame Akwan Farmers Association, under the Ecumenical Association for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (ECASARD), has intercepted 800 pieces of ‘Odum’ and ‘Framo’ lumber at Abease in the Pru district of Brong-Ahafo.

The task force was established to halt the continuous destruction of indigenous species of trees in the area by illegal chainsaw operators.

Mr. Stephen Bori, Chairman of the Association, disclosed this when Dr. King David Amoah, National Coordinator of ECASARD, toured the district.

He said the Association had informed Alhaji Gariba Iddrisu, the District Chief Executive, about the seizure and the illegal chainsaw operations in the area.

Dr. Amoah commended the association for their efforts that would impact positively on awareness creation on the operations of illegal chainsaw operators, and urged other organizations and associations under ECASARD to emulate them to protect depletion of the forest. He advised the farmers to wage war against the application of agro-chemicals to control pests on food crops instead of organic application.
