Tarzan: NPP must tell ‘noisemakers’ to ‘shut up!’

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) must tell its members and affiliate groups clamouring for a new register of voters, despite the Electoral Commission’s decision to the contrary, to “shut up!”

That is the advice offered Ghana’s biggest party by founder-member Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey.

Tarzan, as Dr Wereko-Brobbey is called, told Kwadwo Asare-Baffour Acheampong (KABA), on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen political talk show, on Monday, January 4, 2016, in an interview that: “They should stop wasting our ears”.

Leaders of pro-NPP pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), which has been at the forefront of pushing for a new register ahead of the November polls, have said in many media interviews that they intend fighting the EC’s decision in court.

They have also resolved to embark on a series of street protests to compel the EC to compile a new register.

LMVCA and the NPP argues that the 2012 register has about 76,000 Togolese on it.

NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo has also alleged that the register is bloated by about two million names.

Both groups have said anything short of a new register could call the results of the November elections into question, and possibly plunge the country into mayhem.

Dr Wereko-Brobbey, however, said: “Let the NPP decide from today that we want to offer Ghanaians an alternative and tell all the noisemakers to shut up because those going to court, what are they going to argue about?” he asked.

“I want to hear NPP talk about the fuel price hikes [and] the wrongs going on in Ghana. This is the time to offer alternatives, not keep complaining and wasting our time with threats of going to court. There’ll be no new register. End of the story,” Dr Wereko-Brobbey said.
