The Commission of Inquiry established by President John Mahama to look into judgment debt payments and other related matters, has summoned Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, to answer questions pertaining to payments he authorised during the celebration of Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby, who headed the Ghana@50 Secretariat, has been subpoenaed to appear before the Commission Chaired by Justice Yaw Appau, to answer not less than “17 specific questions” relating to payments the Secretariat made.
“I’ve been subpoenaed to appear before the Commission to answer some 17 specific questions relating to payments made by the Ghana@50 Secretariat,” the former Volta River Authority Chief Executive told Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Monday.
He said the Attorney General, Solicitor General and Jescan Construction Limited are also to appear before the Judgement Debts Commission on Monday August 19 to assist it in its work.
In August 2010, Dr Wereko-Brobby and Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani, Chairman of the National Planning Committee for Ghana@50 were discharged by an Accra Fast Track High Court of charges of willfully causing financial loss to the State.
A three-member commission of inquiry set up by then President John Atta Mills to investigate the Ghana@50 celebrations, accused the two of financial impropriety and recommended their prosecution.
They pleaded not guilty and were admitted to GH¢35 million self recognisance bail each.
After months of legal tussle, Mr Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, a Court of Appeal Judge, sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court judge, in his ruling, upheld the motion of the defence that the charges were instituted in breach of fundamental human rights of the defendants.
