Tamale To Attain City Status By End Of Century

Tamale (N/R), June 25, – The government’s accelerated development strategy is to provide the necessary infrastructure to make the Tamale municipality attain the status of a city by the end of the century. This is being done under the World Bank-sponsored Urban Two and Four training programmes for personnel of the municipality. Mr D. A, Nyankamawu, Tamale municipal co-ordinating director, said this at a public forum on the construction of the Tamale terminals (lorry parks) under the Urban Transport Project (UTP) which is sponsored by the municipal assembly and the Department of Urban Roads at Tamale on Tuesday. He said the government is sensitive to the rapid development and provision of infrastructural needs for Tamale. These include the upgrading of the road network, markets and lorry parks at Aboabo, Savelugu station and Kukuo parks into modern terminals. Mr L.A. Hesse, deputy director of Urban Roads, said the main focus is on improving transport systems in the five cities of the country to meet the status of middle-level third world countries. He said the designs of the terminals have taken into consideration efficient management to eliminate congestion and ensure free vehicular movement and comfort of the travelling public.
